SANDISO MBHELE

About

Sandiso Mbhele is a young medical scientist and a biochemist from Mthatha. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Science and an Honours degree in Biochemistry. His Honours research focused on the comparative analysis of cytokine expression in relation to type 2 diabetes, providing valuable insight into immune dysregulation associated with metabolic disorders.

Currently, Sandiso is pursuing a Master’s degree at the University of Johannesburg under the supervision of Mr TN Tsotetsi. His research focuses on Metabolomic and genetic characterisation of first-generation Aloe hybrids and their parent species to explore their antidiabetic potential. By employing advanced LC-MS techniques and genetic tools, his study aims to uncover bioactive compounds and elucidate metabolic pathways that contribute to the therapeutic effects of Aloe species.

Sandiso is passionate about bridging traditional knowledge with modern scientific methods to drive innovation in natural product drug discovery. His work explores the therapeutic value of medicinal plants using cutting-edge analytical techniques, contributing to the growing field of plant-based pharmacology. Through his research, he aspires to play a pivotal role in advancing healthcare solutions rooted in both nature and science.
