In celebration of South African Science Week 2025, the Imbewu Metabolomics Research Group proudly engaged with the next generation of scientists by hosting inspiring outreach events for Grade 12 science learners from Ingqayizivele Secondary School in Thembisa and Masisebenze Comprehensive School on 6 and 7 August 2025.
Educational Programme Highlights
Artificial Intelligence in Modern Science
The event began with an enlightening presentation by Mr Mashabela Dannies on the transformative role of artificial intelligence in modern science and industry, providing learners with insights into emerging technological trends.
Developing Essential Soft Skills
Our Principal Investigator, Dr Msizi Innocent Mhlongo, shared valuable insights on the importance of soft skills, including:
- Communication abilities
- Teamwork and collaboration
- Adaptability in research environments
Dr Mhlongo emphasised how these skills play a critical role beyond academic qualifications in university success and future career pathways.
Hands-On Metabolomics Demonstration
Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) Workshop
Team members Ms Nompumelelo Sibanyoni, Ms Pfano Witness Maphari, and Mr Mmotla Kamogelo led an engaging practical demonstration introducing learners to the fascinating field of metabolomics.
Workshop Features:
- Live experiment showcasing Thin Layer Chromatography using plant extracts
- Cost-effective analytical technique demonstration
- Visualisation of compound separation in complex mixtures
- Real-world application of scientific research methods
Extended Outreach in Free State
Meanwhile, Mr Motlotleng Thipe from the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) in Bethlehem, Free State, represented the Imbewu Metabolomics Research Group by showcasing our innovative work to Grade 11 and 12 learners, extending our reach across South African provinces.
Commitment to Science Education
By bridging theoretical science with real-world laboratory applications, the Imbewu Metabolomics team aimed to:
- Ignite scientific curiosity in young minds
- Inspire future university study pathways
- Demonstrate practical applications of metabolomics research
- Encourage pursuit of STEM careers
Impact on Future South African Scientists
This community engagement reflects our group’s commitment to science education and empowerment, contributing to the development of future South African innovators and researchers.
